VICTIM IMPACT PANEL - GENERAL INFORMATION
Victim Impact Panel FAQ by Pikes Peak MADD

Drunk driving conviction probation or deferred sentence re DUI, DEAC or DWAI public service requirements in El Paso County DUI cases frequently include court ordered attendance at 2 hours of victim impact panel (VIP). This is a time when persons pleading to or convicted of an alcohol related traffic offense have an opportunity to visit with Pikes Peak Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) members or others who have suffered injury or had a family member suffer injury by a drunk driver. The intent is to increase awareness of the potential harm that can be caused by driving after consuming alcohol. Your vocal participation and input is not required unless you choose to do so. Below is information regarding VIP meetings. Upon attendance, you will be given credit for the 2 hour victim impact panel meeting toward useful public service. 2 hours will be deducted from the total number of useful public service hours you were ordered to complete. Example: 24 hours pubic service - 2 hours VIP = 22 hours net public service to be performed.

Coordination of the Victim Impact Panel (VIP) program is handled by Pikes Peak MADD Chapter (719) 380-8673.  If you have any questions, you may call the Pikes Peak MADD office. Panel meeting cancellations due to weather may be confirmed by calling Pikes Peak MADD. You may not be permitted to attend until after the final hearing when the Court has reviewed the deferred sentencing agreement or has imposed sentence - you may call Pikes Peak MADD to confirm your earliest opportunity to attend.

Driving in Colorado is a constitutionally protected privilege, but nevertheless a privilege which may be lost.  Multiple statutes can cause loss of driving privileges for different driver behavior.  Drivers are entitled to a DMV hearing.  In some circumstances the right to hearing precedes potential DMV adverse action; under other Colorado traffic laws the adverse order is entered, then the driver is provided notice of the adverse action and right to request subsequent hearing.  If hearing has been held or a DMV final order has otherwise entered and the Colorado driver's license or Colorado driving privileges have been suspended, revoked or denied, the driver's remaining recourse is appeal to the District Court.  DMV appeal is subject to a statute of limitations.  Right to appeal may be lost if the driver delays.  Upon final order in the District Court, either party make take the case on appeal to the Colorado Court of Appeals.  Refer to links for information.
